Surface area: TOTAL 10 HECTARES

SANTA MARIA BOCCADORO APPROX. 6 HECTARES
THE MONTAGNELLA ABOUT 3 HECTARES
Geological characteristics: Campanian ignimbrite with clays, light-coloured tuff, mixed volcanic sands, ferrous limestone, pyroclastic ash.
Altitude: between 280 and 300 meters above sea level
Year of establishment: The first certified agricultural vineyard settlements date back to the Middle Ages. Santa Maria Boccadoro was a strategic area as early as the year 800, then, with the construction of our town’s first church (874 AD), it also welcomed various buildings and farms in the vicinity. With the abandonment of the church in 1677, a period of decline began in the area. Part of the land was inherited by the church and managed by the Diocese, and part was acquired by our family. Our current layout and the ongoing redevelopment of the area began in the late 1990s and continues today.
S.ANGELO is the highest part that projects into the dense Massico forest and behind which stands the famous Grotta di S. Angelo, an evocative natural cavity of karst origin frequented since the Pleistocene and once a refuge for hermits.
LA MONTAGNELLA is a small hill that embraces a wide terraced landscape. Formed by layers of ash and tuff banks originating from the Roccamonfina volcano, it also contains a significant iron component, coloring the soil in shades ranging from ochre to red. It was redesigned into various terraces by Gennaro Papa in the early 1980s to accommodate vineyards and olive groves. Today it is returning to its former splendor and is a veritable terrace overlooking the Campanian plain all the way to Vesuvius.

Characteristics that the soil gives to the wine: very fragrant wines, suitable for long evolution.
Characteristics of the Primitivo del Massico grape variety: this is a clone of Primitivo that should not be confused with the Apulian variety, as over time, thanks to the specific soil and climate conditions of the area and the selection process carried out by Gennaro Papa, it has acquired substantially unique characteristics. First and foremost, a rich, dried grape cluster within the turgid clusters. This is its primary agronomic characteristic, which has guided the winery’s winemaking processes since Gennaro Papa resumed vinifying it. In an effort to produce wines with distinctive organoleptic characteristics for high-quality bottling, considerable effort has been made in clonal selection to maximize this aspect.
